Casa Josephine is a brand that comprises an interior design studio, a shop in Madrid, and a hotel in the Rioja Wine Region in the North of Spain. The business was founded in 2006 by Iñigo Aragón and Pablo López Navarro, both Spaniards. The two met around twenty years ago while studying Art History and have been together, as a couple and professionally, since then.
It was when the couple bought and restored an old townhouse in the Rioja Wine Region to turn it into a hotel, that Casa Josephine came to life. Some of the guests staying there asked if they could help decorate their homes or buy furniture, and Iñigo and Pablo gradually started doing this professionally. After a few years of working from home, they opened their showroom and studio in the neighbourhood of La Latina in central Madrid, in 2016. The duo has worked mainly in Spain, with restaurants and residential areas primarily, and in March 2018, Casa Josephine was awarded ‘New Talent of the Year’ by AD Magazine.
Agencia Madrid, one of their recent projects, used to be a motorcycle repair factory. The duo was hired by an advertising agency to transform the two-storey factory into new headquarters and offices. They knocked down the walls, stripped the floors, and pretty much started from scratch. Geometry patterns made of coloured cemented tiles defining the different areas of the office, together with custom-made furniture and textiles, also designed by Iñigo and Pablo, resulted in a warm and vivid advertising office so unique that it was flourishing on the internet months after its launch.
“We have come to understand through practice that to us, interior architecture is about atmosphere and context. We aim to create coherent atmospheres where the pieces of furniture do not stand out individually but operate as elements of a whole. We are also seriously considerate of the cultural tradition of the place and spaces we’re working with.”
